From June 1940 to August 1944, Concarneau was occupied by a German garrison. The Organisation Todt built casemates equipped with sea-facing cannons at all strategic points. The occupiers feared a surprise landing by the Allies. 

The Rouz district, which at the time was little more than pine woods and moorland, was an ideal place to watch over the harbor entrance. This large casemate was linked by a network of trenches to underground shelters and D.C.A. posts. Its 47 mm cannon crossed fire with a similar casemate on the other bank, near the seawall. These weapons were never used, but were abandoned without a fight in 1944. The statue erected on the casemate represents Saint Anne, patron saint of the former parish of Passage-Lanriec and protector of the Bretons. It was sculpted in the 1950s by G. Rouxel and used to be the subject of annual processions.
