Merville Battery

The Merville Battery is one of the coastal batteries of the Atlantic Wall, built by the German army during the World War II. Located in the commune of Merville in Calvados, 2 km from the sea and facing the Bay of Orne, it was designated by the Allied High Command as one of the priority and vital D-Day objectives.
On the night of June 5-6, 1944, it was the object of an unimaginable assault, and its capture by 150 men of the 9th British Parachute Battalion (6th Airborne) was one of the exploits of D-Day.
