SOE Baker Street

The Special Operations Executive (SOE, « Direction des opérations spéciales ») was a British secret service that operated during the Second World War (created; on July 19-22, 1940 by Winston Churchill and disbanded on June 30, 1946), with the mission of supporting various resistance movements, initially in German-occupied Europe, and gradually in all countries at war, including the Far East. The development of SOE led to the occupation of much of the west side of Baker Street. At 84, for example, it moved into the former premises of the Marks & Spencer stores, which housed the cipher and signals departments, leaving 62-64 to house its French section (Section F). At 84, the only sign of the presence of official services is the Inter-Services Research Bureau plaque. In addition, several sections rent apartments in the neighborhood (e.g. section F at Orchard Court), or small private homes (e.g. section RF at 1 Dorset Square), to accommodate agents without their having access to the premises; These were used for pre-recruitment discussions, to give instructions before leaving on a mission, and to present reports on their return. Later, the SOE would also occupy Norgeby House, at 83. The name Baker Street, that of the street where Sherlock Holmes lived, would earn the SOE agents the nickname « Irréguliers de Baker Street ».
