Georges Gigareff family home
Georges Gigareff, born on July 14, 1921 in Alençon (Orne) and died on November 29, 1942 in Auschwitz (Poland), was a member of the French Resistance in La Manche. He came from a family of tailors in Carentan. He was just 19 on April 15, 1941, when he was arrested by German occupiers at his family home in rue du Château. The Saint-Lô military court sentenced him to one month's imprisonment for theft. He served his sentence in Caen prison (Calvados). While in prison, he is accused of instigating pro-Gaullist propaganda in Carentan, which earns him a second sentence, this time of 9 months' imprisonment. For unknown reasons, Gigareff was transferred to the Royallieu camp in Compiègne (Oise) just before his liberation in February 1942. Despite his parents' best efforts, the "hostage" Gigareff was sent to Auschwitz on July 6, 1942. This was the first convoy of political prisoners.
